What is Kyphoplasty?

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive treatment used to treat and alleviate spinal fractures due to osteoporosis or cancer. Kyphoplasty is an orthopedic balloon. This approach is an attempt to return the damaged vertebrae to the correct position.

Generally performed under local or general anesthesia, through a small incision, an orthopedic balloon goes through a hollow tube-like instrument into the fractured bone. The balloon is then carefully inflated to raise the collapsed vertebra to help return it to the correct position.

Once the vertebra is in the correct position, the orthopedic balloon gets deflated and removed. This advanced process creates a cavity in the vertebral body. Lastly, the created cavity is filled with a specially made cement to help aid in support and prevent further damage to the surrounding bone. This cement forms a cast that holds the vertebra in place.

What are the benefits of Kyphoplasty?

Kyphoplasty has shown a favorable outcome in restoring the vertebral body height and correcting spinal deformities. Many have reported significantly less pain with walking, bending, and lifting after receiving treatment.

With a successfully low complication rate, Kyphoplasty will help improve the quality of life by correcting the vertebral body angular deformity, significantly reduce back pain, improve mobility and minimize the amount of bed-rest needed due to spinal fracture pain.
